Roof repair is something that every homeowner doesn't want to do, but it is something that must be done if there is a problem with the roof. Ignoring the problem is just going to cause more damage and lead to a more expensive repair. Don't ignore the small problems, since it can lead to the following problems you may not be aware of.

Damaged Insulation

Roof leaks have the potential to not be detected for several months or years. This is because a roof leak can be hidden by insulation that is absorbing all the water. You won't discover the leak until you go into your attic and find wet insulation. The good news is that you don't have to go into your roof to look for this problem since going into your attic will give you a good view of the insulation

Be concerned if you see insulation that has compressed when compared to the surrounding insulation. If you can reach the insulation, see if it feels clumpy or wet. It is also possible that mold is growing in the insulation, which you can easily smell or see.

When you've found damaged insulation, the leak shouldn't be very far from the area. Look for rotting wood in the ceiling, as well as any holes where light is shining through. If you can find the problem spot, then you know for sure that you have a roof leak. Contact a roofing contractor to come to your home and fix it.

Ice Dams

One problem that can come up in the winter is ice dams. These occur due to having hot spots on your roof, which causes sections of the roof to melt the snow that is on it. The water flows down the roof, reaches a part that is cold, and then freezes again. This behavior can actually cause water to get trapped underneath shingles, lift them up, and cause serious damage to your roof. An exposed roof deck will cause wood rot and roof leaks over time if not fixed early on.

Mold

Roof leaks can not only cause structural issues and create damage but can cause mold to grow within your home without your knowledge. Mold doesn't just look bad since it can cause health problems for those living in your home. Areas where mold grows also cause wood to rot, which creates a more expensive repair.

Contact a roofing contractor like Darnell Construction if you feel you have any of these problems with your home's roof.
